Beeper vs Ferdium: Which Chat Aggregator Should You Use?

TL;DR

Choose **Beeper** if you want supported networks combined into one inbox across desktop and mobile, with unified search and optional chat merging. Its free plan covers up to five connected accounts, with paid tiers for more accounts and features. Choose **Ferdium** if you want a free, open-source desktop workspace that keeps each service in its own web view. Beeper is the more integrated messaging product; Ferdium gives you a simpler, self-hostable way to keep many web apps in one window.

The short answer

Both apps reduce app-switching, but they do it in different ways.

  • Beeper connects directly to supported chat networks from your device or through Beeper Cloud. Messages appear in one inbox with shared search and notifications. It has native apps for desktop and mobile and is owned by Automattic.
  • Ferdium loads each service's web app in its own isolated view inside a desktop app. Nothing is merged across services; the apps simply sit next to each other behind one sidebar. Ferdium is free, open-source, and its server can be self-hosted.

Choose based on whether you want a merged inbox or many separate services organized in one desktop window.

Architecture: connected inbox vs web views

Beeper connects. Its newer on-device connections send messages directly from your device to networks such as WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram. Beeper Cloud remains available for supported networks and keeps the connection attached to your Beeper account. Both approaches feed Beeper's combined inbox, but they differ in privacy, setup, and cross-device behavior.

Ferdium wraps. Ferdium runs each service in an isolated Electron web view. WhatsApp Web remains WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web remains Telegram Web; Ferdium puts them behind one sidebar without translating or merging their messages.

Networks and iMessage

Beeper supports more than ten chat networks, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Instagram, Messenger, Google Messages, Discord, Slack, and X. Its current iMessage integration is different: it automates the Messages app on a Mac, works only on that Mac, and does not sync those iMessage chats into Beeper on other devices.

Ferdium supports a large catalog through community recipes, but each recipe depends on the service having a usable web app. That works well for WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, and email. It cannot provide iMessage because Apple does not offer an iMessage web client.

Mobile, cost, and control

Mobile. Beeper has native iOS and Android apps; Ferdium is for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Network-specific limits still apply — notably Beeper's Mac-only iMessage connection.

Cost. Beeper is free for up to five connected accounts. Beeper Plus and Plus Plus add more accounts and features such as reminders, send later, and additional labels. Ferdium is free and open-source with no subscription.

Control. Ferdium lets technical users self-host its server and keeps each service in its own web view. Beeper also documents a self-hosting option for technical users, but does not provide support for it. Its hosted and on-device products deliver a much more integrated inbox.

Which one should you pick?

  • Pick Beeper if you want one integrated inbox across supported networks, need native mobile apps, and value shared search, labels, reminders, and chat merging. The free plan is enough for up to five connected accounts.
  • Pick Ferdium if you work primarily from a desktop, want free and open-source software, and are comfortable keeping each service in its own web view.

Where Pantheon fits

Beeper and Ferdium are messaging tools. Beeper can merge chats that belong to the same person, while Ferdium keeps services side by side. Neither is designed to manage companies, deals, notes, and files around those conversations.

Pantheon puts supported messaging in the same workspace as that CRM work. It is in invite-only alpha and covers fewer networks than Beeper, so it is not the better choice for broad aggregation today. If you need contacts and deals beside the inbox, see Pantheon vs Beeper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Beeper and Ferdium?

Beeper uses on-device and cloud connections to combine supported networks into one inbox across desktop and mobile. Ferdium is a desktop app that loads each service in its own isolated web view; the services sit side by side but their messages are not merged. Beeper is more integrated and mobile-ready, while Ferdium is free, open-source, and built around desktop web services.

Is Ferdium a good Beeper alternative?

It depends on which part of Beeper you want to replace. Ferdium is a good alternative if you want a free, open-source desktop home for many services. It is not a close replacement for Beeper's merged inbox, unified search, chat merging, or native mobile apps because Ferdium keeps each service in a separate web view.

Does Beeper or Ferdium support iMessage?

Beeper supports iMessage only through its Mac desktop app. The connection automates Apple's Messages app, and those iMessage chats remain on the Mac where it was connected rather than appearing in Beeper on other devices. Ferdium cannot provide iMessage because Apple does not offer an iMessage web client.

Is Beeper free?

Beeper is free for up to five connected accounts. Paid Beeper Plus tiers add more accounts and features such as reminders, send later, and additional labels. Ferdium is free and open-source under the Apache-2.0 license.

Can Beeper merge chats from the same person?

Yes. Beeper can suggest direct-message chats that may belong to the same person using matching names, phone numbers, or email addresses. After you confirm the merge, the messages appear in one timeline and sync across Beeper clients. Ferdium does not merge chats across services because each service remains in its own web view.

Pantheon covers Telegram, WhatsApp, iMessage, and X in one place, and keeps the contact and the history when a conversation moves between them. The invite-only alpha is open for signups.
