AI Note Takers for In-Person Meetings, Phone Calls and WhatsApp Calls

TL;DR

In-person meetings need a device microphone; computer calls can sometimes be captured from the computer’s mic and call audio; ordinary mobile phone calls depend on the phone, operating system and app. Check the exact device and call type before choosing a note taker. A desktop app that handles WhatsApp or FaceTime on a Mac does not thereby record cellular calls on an iPhone.

How do in-person meeting notes work?

Place a recorder where it can hear the people in the room, disclose that recording is on, and start a note. The microphone hears shared room audio, so speaker labels can be less reliable than on a call with separate channels. Noise, distance and overlapping speech matter more than the summary prompt. Granola AI’s product page lists in-person meetings, and Fathom documents an iOS app for in-person conversations.

Can an AI note taker capture a phone call?

“Phone call” can mean a cellular call on an iPhone, an app call on the phone, or a call placed from a computer. Those are different audio paths. Fathom’s supported-meetings guide says it does not support phone calls, even though it has an in-person iOS recorder. Bluedot’s site lists phone calls, but confirm the specific phone and call route. Do not infer cellular recording from a vendor’s mobile-app listing.

What about WhatsApp, FaceTime and other desktop calls?

A call running on a computer can expose call audio to a desktop recorder even when there is no Zoom-style meeting link. Support still depends on the recorder and operating system. Check whether it detects the app automatically, requires manual Record, or needs a browser permission. A WhatsApp desktop call is not the same path as a WhatsApp call on a phone. Bot-free capture explains why the audio source matters.

What should you test before an important call?

Test on the exact device and call app with someone who agrees to a recording. Confirm both sides are audible, the transcript labels are usable, a headset does not hide the other side from capture, and the final note can be found later. For a room meeting, test microphone placement. For a phone call, check what the app actually supports rather than assuming a desktop feature carries over to mobile.

How does Pantheon handle these situations?

In its invite-only Apple-silicon Mac alpha, Pantheon detects WhatsApp and FaceTime calls using the mic and prompts you to take notes. You can also start recording from any note for an in-person meeting; if system audio is unavailable, it captures the mic. Pantheon does not record phone calls on an iPhone. Every recording starts with the recorder confirming consent. Read the consent guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI note taker record an in-person meeting?

Yes, if it can capture the device microphone. Test placement and speaker labeling in the room before relying on the notes.

Can a desktop app record WhatsApp calls?

Some desktop note takers capture call audio on the computer. Confirm support for the exact WhatsApp desktop app and operating system; that does not imply support for a phone call.

Can a desktop app record FaceTime calls?

It depends on the app and computer. Test both sides of the audio and confirm consent before starting a recording.

Does an in-person note taker also record iPhone calls?

No such inference follows. A mobile app may record room audio while cellular call audio remains unavailable. Check each vendor’s exact supported call type.
