How to Back Up Your Telegram Contacts and Chat History

Telegram's August 2026 removal from the App Store was the reminder: the app can become unavailable with no warning, and when the app you run your business on is at risk, so is everything inside it. The messages will likely still be on Telegram's servers — but a business needs its contacts and history somewhere it can actually reach and use them, not locked behind one app's availability.

Telegram's full data export is a Telegram Desktop feature — the mobile apps can't do it, so install the desktop app (Windows, macOS, or Linux) and sign in to your account first. Then:

1. Open Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram Data.
2. Tick what you want to include — Contacts, personal chats, group chats, and media (photos, files, voice messages). The more you select, the longer it runs.
3. Choose a format: HTML if you want to read the export like a web page, or JSON if you plan to import it somewhere else. Pick where to save it.
4. Click Export.

For account security, Telegram may make you wait a set period before the download unlocks. When it's ready, you'll have a folder with everything you selected.

If you only need your contact list, the same Export Telegram Data flow lets you tick Contacts on its own — you'll get your saved contacts and their numbers in the export. One honest caveat: Telegram exports the contacts you have saved. It doesn't hand you the phone numbers of people who keep theirs private.

An export is a real backup — a genuine, offline copy of your data that's yours to keep. Two things are worth knowing about it. First, it's a one-time snapshot: accurate the moment you run it, and a little more out of date with every message after. Second, it's a single copy — and the golden rule of backups is to never rely on just one. So run the export by all means; the safest setup pairs it with a second copy that stays current on its own.

First, run the export above yourself, so you always hold a copy you fully control. Second, keep a living copy — one that stays current on its own, drawn from the channels you connect — so it's already up to date the day you actually need it.
