How to Track Pitch Deck Views (Attachment vs Tracked Link)

TL;DR

A sent PDF attachment cannot report who opened or read its copy. An email open pixel only reports activity around the email, not the deck. A tracked link can record visits, pages viewed and time per page, but forwarding, shared devices and unverified email entries limit what it can say about the human reader.

Why can’t I track an attached PDF?

Once a recipient downloads an attachment, the copy sits outside your sharing system. Your mail client may know whether a message was delivered, but it cannot observe pages read inside that copy. Even if you replace the source PDF later, the old attachment remains in inboxes and forwarded messages.

Does an email open pixel solve it?

No. An open pixel can indicate that an image in the email was requested. It does not prove the recipient opened the attached deck, which pages they saw or whether they read it. Mail privacy features and forwarded messages can also make email-open data misleading. Treat the email and document as separate events.

Upload the deck as a PDF to a sharing tool, create a viewer link and send that URL. The viewer service can record a visit, page views, time spent and sometimes downloads. You may set a password, ask for an email, or expire and revoke the link. Test the link as a recipient so the deck is readable on a phone and the gate is appropriate for the relationship.

A forwarded URL can be opened by someone else. An email gate may collect the address a visitor types, but an unverified entry is not proof of identity. A password shared with a team is not a personal credential either. For sensitive materials, use the tool’s access controls and ask who should receive the files, while accepting that a screenshot or offline copy remains possible.

How should I interpret time per page?

Use it as a rough signal of where the viewer spent time, then follow up with a question. A long interval can include a browser tab left open; a short interval may mean the page was already familiar. Unique viewers and visits can differ when the same person uses several devices or sessions. Do not turn reading analytics into a claim that someone is interested, committed or the named person behind a link.

What is a practical deck-sharing routine?

Keep one current PDF, name it clearly and use a link you can update or revoke. Put detailed diligence files in a separate folder or room after the first conversation. Pantheon’s invite-only alpha lets you share a PDF through a tracked link, see pages and time per page, and update the file without changing the link. Plan the later diligence room.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track who opened a PDF attachment?

No. The attachment is a copy outside your viewer. Use a hosted tracked link if you need document visit data.

Does an email read receipt show that the deck was read?

No. It concerns the email, not the attached file or the pages inside it.

Can a tracked link identify every viewer?

No. Anonymous sessions, forwarding and typed but unverified email addresses can leave identity uncertain. Analytics show activity associated with the link and session.

Should I allow pitch deck downloads?

That depends on the relationship and whether the recipient needs an offline copy. Hiding a Download button can reduce casual saving, but it cannot prevent screenshots or other copies.
